California we come!!!

7/2/08 - Wednesday
Our flight left at 6:20am so we had to wake up at 3:30am to leave home and arrive at the airport in time. It’s amazing how many people are at the airport so early. It sure didn’t look or feel like it was 5:30am, more like 5:30pm. We got off on time with no hitches and the flight was fine. We landed in Dallas and had less than an hour before our connecting flight took off. While walking to the next gate, Cari happened to notice the signs for restrooms said, “Toilets.” It took us by such surprise she had to get her camera out and take a picture of it. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before. If I did, I must not have paid attention. All the signs I’ve always seen say “restroom” not “toilet.” Weird.

We’re on the second leg of our flight to San Jose. I took Peanut to Dad yesterday and he was pissed about being left. He almost didn’t even come out of the kitchen to say goodbye to me. I know he’ll be fine though – he and Dad are perfect together! We’re somewhere over Arizona about now because the captain just said the Grand Canyon was to our right. Of course we’re on the left and can’t see a thing.

I’m excited about being about to use Herb’s D200 for this trip. I hope I figure out everything quickly and easily. I took it out and looked through the manual on the flight from Norfolk to Dallas. It looks like there are a lot similarities, but I haven’t even put a lens on it yet. Bob got home with it last night in time to charge the battery and pack it. I won’t even go into that story …

We’ve been watching the news about all the wildfires in California. Hopefully, they won’t affect our vacation too much. But it is what it is, and we’ll have to deal with it. Bob has been pouring over Yosemite books and maps. I’ve been researching and pouring over photography magazines, books and websites trying to soak up as much info, ideas and techniques as I can.

The captain just said we have about 1 hour til arrival! I’ so excited to see and do new things. My imagination can’t begin to do this country justice I’m sure. I just hope I can walk away with a handful of photos that do the places we visit justice.

After we landed in San Jose and got our rental car, we started driving towards the park. After about an hour we stopped for lunch and found a Super Walmart where we could stock up on some groceries. We managed to get on the road by 2:30pm.

Well, we finally made it to the house around 6:30pm – 9:30pm our body time. We were exhausted and felt like we have been driving all day … wait! We HAD been driving all day!

Some of the drive was beautiful and some of it was pretty blah. Once we hit the mountains, though, Cari and I were getting ob to pull over quite frequently so we could take pictures.

We had picked up a bag of frozen shrimp at Walmart, so we had shrimp, baked potato and broccoli for dinner. Eating out on the deck was wonderful. The house itself is spacious, clean and beautiful.

After cleaning up the kitchen and unpacking I took a shower. We don’t have internet but Cari and I booted up our Macs to look at the pictures we had taken on the way. We headed to bed about 9pm – midnight our body time – and we had been up over 20 hours.

Goodnight!
